Beyond the Status Quo
When Giro Founder Jim Gentes started the brand out of a California garage in 1985, the only sports helmets on the market were heavy, hot and ugly. Gentes asked why it had to be that way, and figured there had to be an alternative to these undesirable helmets.
The status quo, to put it lightly, was lacking.
And with that in mind, Gentes created the first truly modern sports helmet, the Giro Prolight bike helmet. The Prolight was unlike anything available at the time; it breathed well, it seemed to weigh nothing at all and it was cool, as much a vehicle for personal expression as a bucket for your brain.
Giro started by tinkering with the status quo and they’ve never stopped. There is one rule Giro lives by: Never settle for the status quo., and make the best Giro ski helmets that they possibly can. When your goal is to design the future, you don’t get there by simply fiddling around the edges.
The First Cool Snow Helmet
Not so long ago, the vast majority of skiers and snowboarders didn’t wear helmets when they rode, not because they had a death wish but because they were saying “no” to helmets that were uncomfortable and bland. There needed to be a helmet that skiers and snowboarders would want to wear, so Giro created the Nine, the world’s first in-molded snow helmet.
Astonishingly light, comfortable and even cool, the Nine was so innovative it set the stage for every snow sports helmet that followed in its wake. The vented design became a normal sight on mountains everywhere before long.
Giro Snow Helmets for Every Occasion
Giro has a style for every skier or snowboarder out there, including softshell, hardshell and race style helmets. There are many Giro skiing helmets available which offer riders the ability to not only be protected when out on the slopes but also be tailored exactly to their liking. Want to jam out while shredding? Giro makes it easy with plenty of helmets that are audio compatible with after-market systems, and also offers their own audio kits perfect for use in one of their helmets. Want a little more control over your airflow? Grab a Giro helmet that has adjustable ventilation. No matter which Giro helmet you choose, you can be sure it’ll keep your head well protected and your style on point.
What Makes Them Unique?
So, what makes a Giro ski helmet or snowboard helmet stand out from the crowd? Giro works hard to offer a super lightweight design with their helmets, as well as offering cutting edge technologies and designs to ensure safety and style. Comfort is also at the top of the demands list when shopping helmets, and Giro delivers with various fit systems and shapes to ensure that no matter your head shape you can dial in a fit that will work great for both safety and comfort. For an added bonus, some Giro skiing helmets offer a mount for a GoPro camera, meaning you can easily and simply mount your existing GoPro camera to your new Giro helmet!
Innovative Helmet Technology
Giro prides itself on breaking down walls, challenging the impossible and reinventing products. Innovative is a word that gets tossed around a lot, but innovation isn’t a matter of simply adding new features into the mix, but actually making products that make your ride better, and that’s no small feat. Giro doesn’t just want to bring new bells and whistles to the world, it wants to bring new ideas to life that enhance your ride. These innovations are part of Giro helmets because they offer something more:
MIPS: The Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) is a low-friction liner that helps reduce rotational energy on the brain. Although no two crashes are identical, two main types of force — linear and rotational — are related to the majority of brain injuries. Most real-world impacts actually subject your brain to a combination of both linear and rotational forces. MIPS technology protects you from both by allowing the helmet to rotate independently around your head.
Conform Fit Tech: The fully-integrated Conform Fit System utilizes a two-piece shell that literally forms to the unique contours of your head by expanding and contracting with the turn of a dial. A truly adaptive design, it features a durable yet semi-flexible EPP construction that envelops the head to provide the lowest-profile fit ever created as well as unsurpassed custom comfort.
Soft-Shell Construction: Giro’s innovative Soft-Shell Construction helmets are designed to better manage low-energy, day-to-day impacts. This is achieved with Giro’s impact-absorbing liner made with dual density Vinyl Nitrile (VN) and proprietary flexible outer-shell material. Employing two distinct types of VN foam in the liner, the helmet is able to manage both high and low energy impacts, delivering extraordinary comfort and durability that stands to the punishment of progression and on-hill action.
