From Struggling to Sensation
Casual footwear was the name of the game when the Vaccari brothers opened shop in 1939. It wasn’t until after World War II that Nordica, as their company was called, began specializing in ski boots. At that time though, it was cross country ski boots and climbing boots. But they faced the same issues that many still experience in the ski industry – it’s a seasonal product. They kept at it for a few years, struggling to gain market share.
In 1950 a skier named Zeno Colo gave his name to a Nordica Ski Boot and took the boot design to the World Championships in Aspen. He became a world champ in both downhill skiing and giant slalom while wearing Nordica Ski Boots, and just like that Nordica had a reputation for creating a winning ski boot.
Innovation Leads to Evolution
The decade that followed brought with it a handful of ski boot innovations. With the buckle design and polyurethane shells being brought to market in the early 1960s, the whole ski boot industry was flipped upside down. The year 1963 marked the introduction of the buckle, a fastening system conceived in Austria and applied for the first time by Nordica in Italy. The most influential advancement that year, however, was the all-polyurethane ski boot; differing left and right boot molds and injection presses were developed for the first time. Nordica took this new type of technology and design and ran with it.
By 1970, Nordica was a flourishing company with affiliates in five countries and selling 2 million pairs of boots and shoes per year, equaling 30% of the world’s production. Yet, it wasn’t until 1970 that they teamed up with Rossignol in order to open up an affiliate in the United States opening up their market to an American audience. The move into the American market paved the way for recognition of Nordica as an international brand and one of the top ski boots in the world.
Determined to Be the Best
In 2003, Tecnica purchased Nordica and together they have been dominating the competition ever since. They’ve boosted their racing line and have developed technologies and designs to benefit all skiers from the very novice to the pro athletes.
When it comes to design, Nordica aspires to build the absolute very best. When they start the process, they understand that what they are going to bring to market must perform better, fit more comfortably and improve the skiing experience much greater than what is out there now. It’s the determination that drives Nordica to success and it’s in their ski boots that they want you to perform and progress to become the very best skier that you can be.
