The ski season has long been over, but if you’re anything like us here at SKIS.com, you’ve already got the itch to get out on the slopes. Winter is still a long ways off, so what should you do? That’s simple; visit a ski resort or town in the off season. It’s an industry fact that ski resorts can be even more fun in the summer, especially if you know where to go and what to do. One of my personal favorite places to go in the off season is Park City, Utah.
Summer Fun in Park City, Utah:
Park City is one of my favorite mountain towns. It’s a cute little stretch of town on one main road, tucked right into the mountain. Park City is located right between the best ski resorts in the state and at the base of Park City Mountain Resort. The town itself has a lot to offer in the summer, like amazing restaurants such as The High West Distillery. High West is, as you may have guessed, is a whiskey distillery with an amazing restaurant and top notch menu choices, including artisan whiskey based drinks. If you’re looking for nightlife, you have to check out No Name Saloon, one of the hottest spots in Park City with a killer rooftop bar and authentic cowboy feel.
If you’re looking for thrill-seeker activities, check out some on-mountain adventures that the local resorts have to offer. Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort have some pretty great options like chairlift rides, scenic hikes, and amazing mountain bike opportunities. If you’ve never gone downhill-mountain biking before, I highly suggest giving it a try; it’s a great option for ski and snowboard fanatics. Both resorts have bike rentals and offer lessons if you want to start off with some direction. If slow paced is your speed, both resorts also offer horseback riding, which is a great family activity.
Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort:
Both Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) have unique activities, not including the ones we’ve already mentioned. Let’s start with Deer Valley, a hub for summer fun. Deer Valley offers water-based outdoor activities such as fly fishing and, stand up paddleboarding. The infamous Pebble Beach is located at the base of DV and has plenty of options for rental equipment and lessons/guides for these activities. There is also the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater, located right behind Snow Park Lodge. This theater hosts artists, local bands, and even community musical events for the summer. Check out their events calendar here for concerts and more.
On the other hand, Park City Mountain Resort has tons of amazing options for summertime activities. The base hosts a number of events and adventures, starting with Canyons full
blown golf course. There are also disc golf and mini golf, if that’s more your speed. If you’re looking for something a little more fast-paced, check out their alpine coaster and alpine slide. The alpine coaster is basically a roller coaster, but with epic scenery and top speeds of 30 mph. The alpine slide is one of the longest slides in the world, over 3,000ft! If you want something even faster, you have to check out PCMR zip lining, which whizzes you through the trees and across the mountains at speed of 45 mph, it’s a great way to feel like you’re really flying. There’s even a rock climbing wall, summer camp options, and kid’s activities like tubing and gem panning. PCMR is an endless resource for summer fun, check out more options here.
Off the Beaten Path Adventures:
Want an experience you won’t find anywhere else this summer? You have to check out the Utah Olympic Park, the place where the 2002 winter Olympic Games were hosted. This park features Nordic ski jumps, bobsled courses, freestyle aerials, luge runs, and more! Athletes still train here year round, allowing you to chance to watch training sessions, take a ride on the bobsled course, or visit the various museums that feature all sorts of winter legends and history. Did we mention the bobsled ride has death defying speeds of 60 mph and serious curves? In the summer the track runs on wheels, and winter time it switches over to real ice runs. This is the perfect park for winter enthusiasts to geek out even in the summer months.
Park City itself offers additional fun filled activities that allow you to expand your horizons. Park City hot air balloon rides offer awe inspiring views of the area and a whole new way to catch some air. Rides can last from a quick hour tour to a several hour excursions, and are great fun for the whole family. Looking for a way to get wet and wild on the river? Check out Park City’s river rafting options for some white rapids excitement. There is also water skiing, sailing, tubing, boating, and more. If you need to cool down this summer, water sports are a great option.
State and National Parks:
If camping is more your style, there are tons of RV and camping options in the Park City area. There are two local state parks, the Wasatch Mountain State Park and the Rockport State Park. These parks have great camping and hiking options and the scenery is out of this world. Some places even have cabin rentals and yurts if you’re looking for something a little different. If you’re willing to hike a little farther, you should definitely check out Moab, or Canyonlands National Park. The whole park is filled with desert beauty and naturally carved red rocks into wondrous formations. This place is so breathtaking it’s hard to describe, so you should probably go see it for yourself.
If you’re a skier or snowboarder at heart, but looking for the perfect summer adventure you really should consider checking out Park City. It has everything you need to tie you over until winter rolls around, and is a great choice for the entire family or just a couple of friends looking to be outdoors.
