I’ve been skiing since I was 3 years old, a late starter in my dad’s eyes since my brother started at only 2 years old. Growing up skiing was a pretty awesome luxury, and here is what I miss most about skiing as a kid:

  1. The fanny packs and one-pieces
Kid Skiing
My whole family in one piece snowsuits. Although it’s hard to see me, I’m underneath my mom squeezed in the back.

Ok, maybe this is a generational thing, and for the record, I’m 25, but onsies and fanny packs were the gear I grew up on that I miss the most. Rear entry boots and straight skis? Not so much. My one piece ski suit was the warmest outfit I have, and probably will, ever own. All I remember is that two things were not an option while wearing my onsie, getting snow down my pants and going to the bathroom quickly. And the fanny pack? Don’t even get me started. Chapstick? Check. Sunscreen? Check. Sunglasses? Check. Sure, backpacks do the trick but sitting on a chairlift with a backpack is no picnic. The fanny pack needs to make a comeback.

  1. Mandatory hot chocolate breaks

These days it seems the art of the hot chocolate break is lost. Everyone wants to get in one more run, or just a lunch break is enough, or even just that the hot chocolate at the lodge is expensive. But when I was a kid? You better believe that mid-afternoon hot chocolate was happening, and it was possibly the best part of the day. Sure, maybe a beer break is an option nowadays and I’m not complaining, but it’s just not the same. Bonus: I also had zero concerns about the extra calories.

  1. Not having to carry all my stuff
Check out my sweet matching fanny pack. And you better believe that’s a ski school bib I’m wearing, ski school for life!

There are very few things I don’t enjoy about skiing, but lugging my gear from the house, to the car, to the lodge and back is not my favorite thing to do. But back in the day, my dad would lug armfuls of gear back and forth for us. Don’t get me wrong, I remember having to put my arms straight out in front of me and have my parents pile up my skis and anything else I could carry. But it certainly wasn’t all of my gear, and if we were in a rush all I need to do was walk as fast as I could in ski boots carrying nothing.

  1. Everything was free

I know, right? Somehow, I managed to fall in love with one of the most expensive sports in the world. Remember the days when you didn’t know how much lift tickets were, or that lodge lunches were ridiculously over priced, or that between the cost of your skis, boots, poles, accessories and outfit you could buy a car? Ahh, good times. Shout out to my parents for this one, thanks guys!

  1. First chance at freedom

As a kid, pretty much everything I did was supervised or mandated by an adult. But when I was skiing, I was a free wild child. If I wanted to race my brother down the hill at neck breaking speed, then that’s what I was going to do. If I didn’t want to follow the groomed trail, you bet I’d veer off into the trees until I inevitably got stuck or hit something. Best of all, the ski hill was the first place my brother and I were allowed to roam by ourselves, all we had to do was be back at the lodge by 4:00pm. Skiing was my first taste of freedom as a kid, and for that I will be forever grateful.

What do you miss most about skiing as a kid?
