Protect your head and your shred cred with the Giro Union MIPS Helmet

Helmets are dominating the mountains these days, and there’s a really good reason for that. Helmets have become an essential of a piece of equipment, just as much as your skis or boots, because they can save your life. As the use of helmets has increased, so has the technology that is being used to make helmets as safe as possible, and as comfortable and warm as they can possibly be.

However, here at we know that you’re not going to wear a helmet if it doesn’t look good. And the brands have figured out that technology needs to not only do amazing things, but it also needs to look cool for people to get on board. Brands are working harder than ever to bring you the perfect combination of technology, protection, and style. That’s where the Giro Union MIPS Helmet comes in.

The Giro Union MIPS is the perfect helmet for all mountain freeriding and resort exploration. What creates this perfection is the combination of the light weight in-mold construction, MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System), adjustable venting, and a shape and fit so clean you won’t want to take the helmet off even when you’re not on the mountain. Let’s dive in a little deeper and explore all the features that you get with the Giro Union MIPS.

There are quite a few different constructions in the helmet world nowadays. For the longest time, there was only one construction, which was a hard outer shell that was attached to the foam liner inside. Helmet companies needed to develop a lighter weight system that allowed you the consumer to wear the helmet for long periods of time and not get fatigued by having a heavy helmet on your head, that was oftentimes very uncomfortable. Then came a new and better mold, such as in-mold construction. The Giro Union MIPS features in-mold construction, and it almost feels the same weight as wearing a beanie. This construction style makes this helmet incredibly light without sacrificing any protection. In-mold construction fuses a strong poly-carbonate outer shell with the helmet’s impact-absorbing foam liner. This process allows for better ventilation systems, making in-mold helmets lighter and cooler than other construction styles.

The MIPS in the name Giro Union MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. A common misconception of MIPS is that it is a multi-impact system, this, however, is not true. MIPS is about multiple directions for impacts, not multiple impacts. Most helmets are designed to take a straight on impact, by adding MIPS the Union MIPS will also provide protection in angled impacts. MIPS allows the helmet to slide relative to the head, adding more protection against rotational violence to the brain caused by angled impacts. MIPS is a form of slip plane technology, meaning that a MIPS helmet is constructed from two layers that rotate against each other, mimicking the rotation of your brain inside your skull. While MIPS has been around for over twenty years, the technology has set the helmet world a blaze in the last couple years. It is offered in so many helmets now including more helmets in the Giro lineup like the Giro Nine MIPS Helmet.

The fit on the Union MIPS is incredible, and this is one of those areas where it’s the little things that make all the difference. These little things include vertical tuning, which is an adjustment that is underneath the liner that allows you to adjust the angle that the Union MIPS sits on your head. It also comes with the inform fit system, which is a dial on the back of the helmet that adjusts the fit of the helmet and dial in the perfect fit. Another important feature in terms of fit is the XT2® liner. This liner helps ensure a comfortable fit while also providing odor protection.

Helmets are insanely warm, and because of this venting in helmets is very important. The Union MIPS provides you with all the venting you could hope for. It has Stack Vent™, which is a vent that lines up with the top of your goggle. This allows the warm air inside your goggle to vent up and out through your helmet in order to prevent your goggles from fogging up. Keeping your goggles fog free while maintaining total helmet and goggle integration is something you never knew you needed, but will never ski again without. The Union MIPS also comes with Thermostat™ Control. Thermostat ventilation control allows you to custom tune airflow instantly with a simple low-profile control button on the outside of the helmet. No other system is faster or easier to adjust, and nothing is more effective at keeping you comfortable.

Protection and comfort are obviously the most important aspects of a helmet, but we’re not new to the ski game here. The style of the helmet is a very close second to those other factors. If you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you will ski good (I think this was proven by science). The Union MIPS is not short on style, it comes in many different colors. My favorite is the Black and Titanium, the titanium accents add the perfect amount of flair to the more conservative matte black finish. This helmet is low profile, so you won’t look like you have a space helmet on while you’re skiing. To add to your style this helmet is audio compatible, so you can get some drop ins and listen to your music on the hill. This majorly ups the steeze factor.

We all need skis, we all need boots, and we all need helmets. And a helmet is a whole lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital. With helmets like the Giro Union MIPS there is no reason anyone should be skiing in a beanie anymore. This helmet will help protect that precious little head of yours while keeping you looking stylish on the hill.
