Race skis are designed for the sole purpose of going fast. There are four disciplines in ski racing and skis are designed differently for each event. Slalom skis are the shortest with the shortest turn radius. This allows athletes to make short quick turns between the tight gates in a slalom course. Giant Slalom is still considered a technical event but it does not have the same gate combinations that racers face in slalom so the skis and their turn radii are longer. Super G and Downhill skis aren’t as commonly found on the retail market because the speed events are more dangerous as athletes can reach speed in excess of 80 miles per hour. Imagine driving down the highway and sticking your head out the moon roof of your car… now imagine strapping 7 1/2 foot long 2x4s onto your feet and wearing a spandex suit as you stand on the roof of the car; as you can see speed skiing isn’t for the faint of heart.
