My is 18 and an avid skateboarder. We he will be learning to snowboard for the first time over spring break. Can he use his skateboard helmet for snowboarding, with addition of a lightweight insulating liner or hood?

    Thank you

    Stephanie,

If your son was going one time and just getting the basics, I would say that using the skateboard helmet would be okay, provided that he wears some insulating underlayer on his head; skateboard helmets don’t offer much in terms of warmth and heat retention.

However, from the sound of your comment, he will be snowboarding several times over spring break. For this reason, I very strongly recommend a helmet specific for snowboarding. Snowboarding helmets are tested thoroughly for protecting against impacts on the snow, where spills are different than those that take place in the skateboarding world. Therefore, I would spend a little money and invest in a snowboarding helmet; you’ll sleep comfortably knowing that he’s protected the right way.
