Summer Ski and Snowboard Camps
By. Marcia Jeffries
Skiing and Snowboarding doesn’t have to end as spring and summer rules….
Don’t just send your kids to the same old camp – you have alternatives….
Winter 2011-12 was one to forget for skiers and snowboarders in most of North America. The record-warm temperatures and below-average snow totals let down both locals and travelers in places like Colorado, Utah and Lake Tahoe. Thankfully, it’s all over, and summer is just about here. Looking forward to better and more normal winter conditions in the coming 2013 fall/winter seasons is what we will embrace. While you could use the summer months to replace memories of poor snow conditions with biking, boating and hiking, you could also redeem the poor ski season by taking a summer ski/snowboard trip.
Ski and snowboard all year round! Mt Hood in Oregon offers plenty of ski and snowboard camps for kids of all ages. The various camps provide top notch coaching and training facilities for racing, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding. The Palmer Glacier offers extreme ski/snowboard areas as spring and summer kicks in. Running two chairs above the lodge in the summer opens plenty of terrain, which is closed in the winter because this area has too much snow.
Racers get the opportunity to train with some of the best coaches in the world, as many of the US Ski Team coaches and members spend their summers in Mt. Hood. While the US Paralympic team typically gets the best lane (the one closest to the chair) there is plenty of space on the 20+ training lanes for all of the race camps to get plenty of gate time in before heading back to camp for some afternoon dryland training. Keely’s Camp is for you girls! Keely’s Camp is a race camp for girls run by all female coaches. Many young girls are opting to train with female coaches, so they can work on their mental edge in addition to their ski technique. Keely’s Camp provides a positive and encouraging approach aimed at providing girls with amazing coaching and positive reinforcement to keep them loving racing.
For the freestyle skiers and snowboarders there are plenty of great camps, but Windells is one of the more popular camps, probably due to their private terrain park. Rooted in progressing snow sports, snowboarding and skiing has evolved tremendously in the years since Tim Windell and four times World Champion, Craig Kelly, invited the best riders to Whistler, B.C. for fun and some of the first competitions. The crew brought the sport to new heights. Tim eventually made the move to Mt. Hood, Oregon where he brought a vision to life: a revolutionary environment that centralizes athletic development and most importantly, fun.
Amazing coaching will inspire and transform a young skier or snowboarder to exceed their limitations with confidence, skill and be prepared to take the steps and make the effort to excel as they love their sport. Plenty of pro’s drop in during the summer and coach, this summer skiers Tanner Hall, Sammy Carlson, Tom Wallisch, TJ Schiller and Will Wesson and Andy Parry from Line’s Traveling Circus will be at camp to guideyou as you step up your game.
Over the last 22 years, Windells Camp has assumed a leading role in the transformation of the world’s best snow sport athletes. The top 10 men and 8 of the top 10 women in this season’s Dew Action Sports Tour were former Windells campers. Additionally, every US Olympic Medalist has been to a Windell’s Snowboard Camp session.
Coaching techniques of the hand-picked, highly qualified staff at Windells combine focused riding with all-out fun and positive reinforcement. US Olympic Snowboard Coach, Mike Jankowski, and many well-known coaches have put in their time at Windells and a crew of 300 works to bring the abilities of athletes, young and old, to the next level.
No expense is spared in the design and upkeep of camp facilities both on and off the mountain. Windells builders are the best in the business. On-hill terrain features pro-style halfpipes, table-tops, booters, and mind bending rail set ups. Two private rope tows make for uninterrupted ride time, and campers have an all access pass to the 1.5 miles of perfectly groomed park.
If skiing or snowboarding is in your blood and you can’t get enough – that is a good thing, being outdoors, athletic, healthy, experiencing stunning views, professional instruction and great company sets the tone for Summer Ski and Snowboard Camps. Many additional treats and perks are offered: selection of lodging, cool activities when not on the snow, supervision, amazing instructors and coaches and major brands have demo shops so you can try out next years stuff. Just be a skier or a snowboarder to join – learn, race and practice to be more intense, but first and foremost experience what you love all year round.
