About Ski Racing Helmets

Ski Racing Helmets are designed to protect racers while gate training and racing. Ski Racing Helmets undergo the same safety examinations as regular ski helmets so they aren’t typically any safer for ski racers in terms of brain protection. Ski Racing Helmets are full shell helmets which are the traditional style of ski helmets. A full shell design has a hard shell that covers the ears. The covers provide a small increase in protection for the sides of the head, and of course the ears. Most racers will utilize a full shell helmet because most models are compatible with chin guards.

Chin Guards are typically made of metal and attach to the helmet to protect a racer’s face from gates in the event that a cross block is missed or a gate wraps around the cross block and hits the racer. Most racing organizations require Chin Guards be worn in order to ski slalom. Some athletes take the Chin Guard off for skiing Giant Slalom while others have two ski racing helmets so they can change quickly between events without risking loosing screws or the chin guard. Chin Guards should be removed for speed events such as Super G and Downhill.

There are several different companies like POC, Shred, Giro and Uvex producing Ski Racing Helmets in a variety of colors and patterns to offer more cool options to ski racers. These manufacturers are also typically producing a full line of ski goggles to coordinate with the various ski racing helmet options they provide.
